Editing

For me, the joy of editing is allowing anything to be repurposed and seeing what surprising connections might present themselves. I’m delighted when someone appreciates me as a storyteller because it really is what elevates an edit, regardless of the format.

For most of these projects, I was hired by a production company and worked to their brief.

RIBA

I edited this Progress Films project for the Royal Institute of British Architects in conjunction with the BBC. Although it has the feel of a documentary, it’s effectively a promo for the Kingston University London's student Town House outlining why it deserved to win the Riba Stirling Prize. Incidentally, it did.

Microsoft WE Together M&O Summit

I’ve edited a lot of conference videos, sometimes on-site during the event.

Hyundai ASMR

I love a project that allows me to really focus on one part of the editing process - in this case sound. This cut was made using moments from a much longer edit I did for Superlative Films and Hyundai. The full edit followed the construction of a car from start to finish - this cutdown plunges into the sound design to create an ASMR experience.

Danielle Children's Fund (Spanish)

This was one of a series of films I edited for This Is Spoken. The footage was provided by a production team in Quito, and was cut to a series of interviews with service users of a children’s charity. I’m a Spanish speaker and am happy to translate and edit in Spanish, even when dialects are involved.

Making Dreamland: Documentary Sizzler

I’m a big fan of documentary, and really enjoying filming and editing. I was a camera operator throughout the 17-day shoot for this sizzler. Very hard to cut down to three minutes!

Guilt Free Vaping

This promo for Guilt Free Vaping leans into humour and relies very much on the good will of strangers.

BRANDED ENTERTAINMENT

Branded entertainment is one of my favourite genres: Placing a brand somewhere in an episode of a web series or promo spot that borrows from Factual Entertainment TV shows, but has to deliver the pace and visual flair of a YouTube video or Insta reel. It's a really fun way to leverage storytelling, narrative arcs, dialogue scenes and sub-plots.

Tinder house: Episode Two

A Big Brother-style format emphasising the long-term romantic potential of Tinder.

Off Grid: Episode Four - Tandem Drift

The shoot involved five camera operators, an FPV drone and about 20 Go Pros. When you have a lot of material it’s important not to get overwhelmed with all the options, find a storyline and stick to it. Loads of drone footage doesn’t hurt either.

Off Grid: Episode Two - Bosozoku

A presenter-led series shot in Japan. Until the car ride at the end, a lot of the action in this episode was quite static, so I leant into the transitions from one scene to another.

SWANA Art: Episode Three

Art itself can be quite static, but the artistic process makes for a great visual through-line.

MUSIC VIDEOS

Already Gone

Music videos are great fun to edit. They don’t need a narrative thread but it’s nice when there’s time and budget to incorporate a story that fits around the track.

Lagom

Adding a story to a music video can complicate the shoot, so sometimes it’s best just to throw food at yourself in front of a Phantom Flex 1000fps camera.
